Hair falling out is distressing, whether it’s due to stress, illness, chemotherapy or you’re simply prone to balding. By the age of 60 nearly 40 per cent of women will have experienced some form of hair loss, and while many men find hair falling out very upsetting, women often find it devastating. But there are steps you can take to actually help prevent hair falling out and also to help thinning hair look thicker.
DISCOVER WAYS OF DEALING WITH HAIR LOSS
1.USING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS
Use volumising shampoos, and a volume-enhancing root-lift spray when drying your hair to make the hair stand up from the scalp giving it a thicker appearance. And avoid leave-in conditioners and heavy hair-sprays which flatten fine hair.
2.IMPROVE YOUR DIET
A lack of minerals can cause hair loss, so eat iron-rich foods such as liver, kidney, branflakes and soya products. Protein and zinc are also important. Foods with zinc include wheatgerm, pumpkin seeds, egg yolk and shellfish – so if you’re suffering from hair loss keep up your intake of these vital foods.
3.FIND THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENTS AND VITAMINS
There are claims that sea kelp supplements can help prevent hair falling out and thinning. These are available from health food shops. And if you find it hard to keep up your zinc and/or iron intake (both of which help boost immunity and protect against thinning hair), you could try zinc and iron supplements.
4.TWO TOP HAIRSTYLING TRICKS
Layers can give a sense of volume to hair that is thinning. Combining this with a large-curl will make the hair look even thicker.
5.COLD WASH YOUR HAIR
Not everyone agrees that this works, but some hair experts claim that blasting thinning and fine hair with a cool or cold water final rinse will close the cuticle and help hair to swell slightly so that it looks thicker.
6.BLOWDRY WITH CARE
Many hairdressers suggest air-drying thin hair or blow-drying on the slowest setting as ‘overblowing’ can cause fine strands to flatten. Bear in mind that blow-drying ‘upside down’ can create the illusion of fullness, as can backcombing hair.
A prescription-only drug called Spironolactone can help with thinning hair. It is thought to work by decreasing the production of testosterone. Women with hair loss are sensitive to this hormone. Positive results are said to occur for some women with hair loss within three to six months.
A full head of hair extensions can be attached to your remaining hair through a fine mesh. The process can take a long time and can be expensive and you may need to go back for regular tidy-ups but many women swear by the results. Lots of hairdressers offer hair extensions nowadays, even for women who are not suffering hair loss.
9.WEAR A HAIRPIECE
If your hair is thinning or you have a balding patch you may only need a hairpiece rather than a wig. A hairpiece can be permanent (attached with medical adhesive) – or removable (attached by double-sided adhesive). For the best results have a hairpiece fitted by a professional hairdresser rather than trying to do it yourself or having a friend try.
Wigs shouldn’t be seen as a last resort if you have hair loss or thin hair – specialist centres offer hundreds of choices, and six out of 10 wigs are bought as fashion accessories by women with healthy hair. Wigs usually feel strange at first but become familiar quickly – like new shoes. And you can use them to make a stylish statement if you choose well.

Here are some basic but very important points to consider when choosing that piece.
1.Decide on the desired look while bearing in mind what will best suit your features; if in doubt, ask for an opinion.
2.Carefully consider your hair texture. For example, avoid wearing curly hair with a straight extension. It is not attractive and does not speak well of the individual as regards attention to detail.
3.Pay close attention to hair color. There are different shades of black and some have a faded appearance. So unless you are trying to be dramatic, ensure that the extension matches your hair color as closely as possible. That includes any color you decide to wear.
4.Length is also important. This is where your comfort-ability comes in. If you are accustomed to short hair and are not sure about wearing long extensions, go with what you are comfortable with; if you want to be adventurous, that is fully encouraged but remember to get something that will suit you and not someone else. After all, what looks good on one will not look good on all. Focus on accentuating your physical features.
5.Take into account, that the hair extension you choose will be worn for a length of time and should be chosen with occasion suitability in mind.
6 .Ensure that the store you decide to make your hair purchase from is reputable for selling hair and its products.

Everyone has had that morning when they oversleep or hit snooze one too many times. The “I-just-got-electrocuted” look might not cut it for the office, but the solution is easy: Christina Butcher, editor of style blog Hair Romance, recommends a braid. “Braids actually look better in dirty hair and they hold better,” she says.
This is especially problematic in the winter— and you can help prevent it by using a conditioning mask at least once a week, or leaving your conditioner in a little bit longer. “The best way to prevent frizz is to put product in before it dries,” says Nick Arrojo, owner of Arrojo Studio.
Our experts agree: It’s all about the dry shampoo. “This is its purpose and it is the best,” says Butcher. While lifting your hair, spray lightly on the roots, let sit a minute or two, and then brush out. The product will absorb the oil and leave your hair fresh and ready to go.
The solution to this is almost too easy: Switch your part. “Don’t ever put your hat on the same way you want to wear your hair,” says Butcher. Before you pull your hat over your head, push your hair over to the opposite side you normally wear your part on, then switch it back when you take the hat off.
Everyone who has decided to grow out their bangs has that phase where they won’t cooperate—too long to be left alone, but too short to tuck behind your ear. The solution? “Embrace accessories,” says Butcher. “Grab a couple of bobby pins and do a cross design or twist it back and hide it underneath your hair.” By turning them into a statement or focal point, you’ll forget how frustrating they can be.
“A curling iron is a really good way to get some volume right away,” says Arrojo, who also uses a workable hairspray on the underside of the roots, lets it dry and then runs his hands through to add some volume. Butcher flips her hair upside down and blasts her roots with hot air to add some life back into her hair.
If you haven’t had time to make it to the salon, a curling iron is the best tool, according to Butcher. Adding a bit of volume to your hair will make it harder to see your part and will help hide the mismatched roots. “When you have straight hair with a straight part line, that’s when it’s easier to see your growth,” she says.
“Try a simple twist back,” says Butcher, who has extremely curly hair herself. “It gives the impression your hair is under control.” Just grab two sections and twist it to the back for an easy fix that will look finished and refined. You can find her tutorial here.
